PART 1: the baby drop box
PART 1: This man has saved 1,505 abandoned babies in Seoul over the past 10 years. In fact, a few days before I had arrived, baby # 1,505 was dropped. Meet Pastor Lee, founder of the “baby drop box”, a safe place for moms to abandon their babies. In the United States, single moms are celebrated, supported and seen as being a strong powerful woman. If a mom were to abandon her baby in the US she would be arrested and convicted of a crime. In Korea, abandoning babies is a phenomenon because single moms are shunned from society. It’s not against the law to leave your baby on a doorstep here! What’s seen as worse than that is the fact that you embarrassed yourself and your family by getting pregnant, no matter what class you are. Single moms do not get accepted into University and that’s not considered discrimination, single moms cannot get a job, essentially they are ostracized from society. Learning ALL OF THIS is mind-blowing and makes me even more grateful for my story and feel more purposeful to get to be here creating a One Love Seoul project that will help abandoned babies and their moms. What an honor it was to spend the day with the babies volunteering, connecting with Pastor Lee and interviewing him on my podcast, One Love Heroes. Episode out soon! You don’t want to miss this one, a very moving conversation with Pastor about him using his own story to change the world. Thank you to my crew from Australia, Grace, Watson and James for holding space for such an extraordinary experience.
